A practical editor comparison

PhotoCraft vs Photoshop.

PhotoCraft offers a free, open-source route to Photoshop-style editing. Photoshop remains the safer choice for a workflow that already depends on its exact behavior. Start with the task and files you need to deliver.

This is a comparison of current official documentation, not a hands-on benchmark. PhotoCraft capabilities and limitations are attributed to its maintainers; the switching advice is our editorial judgment.

Which should you choose?

Try PhotoCraft for experiments, learning and noncritical edits when you can keep backups and work around bugs. Keep Photoshop for established production work if client delivery, a particular plug-in or exact PSD rendering is essential. PhotoCraft's own status notice calls it early alpha and says it is not yet a replacement for daily professional work.

A familiar interface can reduce the time needed to try an editor. It cannot establish that a saved document will behave the same way in another application.

PSD support needs a file-level test

PhotoCraft's format report lists PSD reading and writing across layers, masks, text, effects and other document elements. The same report records known failures and separates tests for importing a render from tests for saving a document again. Those measure different things: a file can reopen without preserving every editable behavior or matching every pixel.

For a real comparison, inspect the features your work uses: fonts, clipping, masks, adjustment layers, Smart Objects, blend modes and color output. Reopen a saved copy in Photoshop if that is where a client or teammate will edit it. A flattened PNG reference helps identify visible changes, but cannot prove the layers remain editable.

If your starting file is a Photoshop cloud document, Adobe documents saving a local PSD. That is the file to evaluate in another editor. Exporting a local copy does not transfer Adobe's cloud history or collaboration workflow.

Compare behavior, AI and plug-ins

The PhotoCraft parity assessment distinguishes menu coverage from behavior and workflow depth. A command being connected to a menu is a useful implementation milestone; it is not a guarantee that the result, performance or interaction matches Photoshop. Typography, professional workflows and plug-in compatibility deserve particular attention.

Adobe's Generative Fill guide describes selecting an area, choosing an AI model and generating variations. If that process is part of your work, verify a replacement explicitly. Do not equate a similarly named PhotoCraft command with the same models, output or subscription entitlements.

List essential extensions, actions, presets and shortcuts before trying either editor. A photographer dependent on one plug-in has a different switching problem from someone making a simple social graphic. Finish one representative task end to end; opening the file is only the beginning.

Account for cost and your computer

PhotoCraft removes the editor subscription cost. Adobe's US plans page listed Photoshop at US$22.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly when checked. That is a billing commitment, not a month-to-month quote. Check your region, taxes, included applications, credits and cancellation terms before buying.

PhotoCraft's published builds include Linux, which makes it relevant if you need a native Linux option. For Photoshop, check Adobe's current OS, GPU and memory requirements. We have not measured speed on either application; a Rust implementation or GPU renderer alone does not demonstrate a performance advantage.

Run a small switching test

  1. Keep the original. Duplicate a representative project and record the editor version, fonts and plug-ins it needs.
  2. Repeat an actual job. Edit text, adjust a mask, change an effect and export the required delivery format. Note missing steps and time spent on workarounds.
  3. Save under a new name. Reopen in both editors. Compare the final image and important editable layers before moving another project.

Questions

Good to know.

Can PhotoCraft replace Photoshop?

It may cover a particular editing task, but the developers still label it early alpha and do not recommend it as a replacement for daily professional work. Test your own files and required features before changing a production workflow.

Will PhotoCraft preserve every Photoshop layer?

No universal guarantee is available. The project documents PSD reading and writing alongside fidelity gaps. Check a copy of your PSD, inspect important layer types, save under a new name and reopen it in the destination editor.

Does PhotoCraft include Photoshop Generative Fill?

Do not assume feature equivalence. Adobe documents its own Generative Fill workflow, while PhotoCraft identifies AI and generative features as a remaining gap. A similar menu or tool label does not establish the same behavior.

Is PhotoCraft made by Adobe?

No. PhotoCraft is an independent open-source project from the ArtCraft team and community. Photoshop is an Adobe product.
